10,000 Sandalwood Trees to be Planted in Delhi This Monsoon

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has directed the land-owning agencies maintaining parks and gardens in the national capital to plant 10,000 sandalwood trees during this monsoon season. This will enable them to earn income from their land wealth.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Parks and Gardens Society, Delhi Biodiversity Society and others are advised for sandalwood cultivation during the current monsoon session.
Mr. Saxena said planting sandalwood trees, along with increasing plant diversity and generally enriching the environment, would also generate money from government land and create a major financial asset for land-owning agencies in Delhi.
Sandalwood trees grow fully in 12 to 15 years. Each tree can be sold for Rs 12 to 15 lakh depending on the current price. The estimated cost of 10,000 sandalwood trees at this price will be Rs 12 to 15 thousand crores.
