New Delhi. Hariyali teej falls two days before Nag Panchami on Shukla Paksha Tritiya during Sawan. This year, the date for Hariyali Teej is August 19. It is a vibrant and auspicious Hindu celebration honoring goddess Parvati’s persistent love for Lord Shiva. It denotes the idea that goddess Parvati had to go through 108 incarnations before she could wed Lord Shiva.
The word “hariyali,” which means “greenery,” comes from the greenery that the monsoon season brings to India. It is observed by the married women of the north Indian states of Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.
Married ladies observe a fast while offering prayers for their husbands’ health and longevity. Women who are single take part in the fast in an effort to meet a life partner who resembles Lord Shiva. Also known as Sindhara Teej, mother-in-laws are supposed to give sindharas to their daughter-in-laws on this occasion. Sindharas are a basket of gifts which consists of homemade sweets like ghewar, bangles, henna etc.
Married women dress themselves as newlyweds by wearing green cloth and jewellery. Henna application on the hands is another custom that many women observe on this day. Women also go to their parents’ homes to pay homage, swing on them in pairs while singing Teej melodies. Fifteen days after Hariyali Teej (also known as Choti Teej), Badi Teej is celebrated. The other two teej that women celebrate are the Kajari Teej (Badi Teej) and the Hartalika Teej.
