New Delhi: Indian Council of Agriculture Institute (ICAR)-Indian Institute of Horticulture Research (IIHR) at Hesaragattha has inaugurated many new facilities for the farmers. Among these new facilities, ‘Plant Health Clinic’ is an interesting and important set up in their campus.

Gardeners can bring samples of disease infected plants to the clinic and get free diagnosis done with prescription of suitable cure. The clinic will provide diagnostic services and crop management advice to farmers and other horticultural growers. “Here, pathogen isolation is done. We conduct testing on the crop samples they provide to determine whether the disease is viral, bacterial, or fungal. We isolate them if we don’t instantly get to know them, a scientist from IIHR noted.

He continued by saying that the extension division will receive the disease information and use it to raise awareness of the condition. Every 15 days, we release advisories with information on prevalent illnesses affecting the specific crop at that time and whether or not it will be helpful to growers of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

The equipment, which has a capacity of two tonnes per hour, will take into account factors like purity, germination potential, and moisture to improve the quality of the seeds. The seeds will be coated with polymer to improve adhesion rather than the conventional methods of dusting and slurry coating, which posed health risks. Currently, the unit has the capacity to handle up to 25 different vegetable seed varieties, two medicinal and flower seeds, and one fruit seed.
