Mainpuri woman earns Rs 16 lakh through saffron farming

Mainpuri: Determination never hinders an individual from success. Here is the story of a 64-year-old woman from Mainpuri (UP), named Rekha Sinha. She had a passion to do something different in life. She began saffron farming and succeeded in her mission. It has been helping her family as well as the local community. Rekha and her family pocketed more than Rs 16 lakh and are hoping to earn more in the coming years.

Rekha stated that ‘I have interest in farming, but due to lack of time I could not pursue it’. Currently, I am free, so I am trying to do something innovative; I tasted success as well. Rekha wanted to grow saffron because its demand is high in the national and international markets due to its medicinal values. It is very expensive and used in some important food items.

In 2023, Rekha got an idea about growing saffron indoors. Her husband had been running a cold storage business, which helped her a lot. Several of her family members were surprised about her thinking because saffron is usually grown in Kashmir. However, one day Rekha shared her thoughts about growing saffron inside their home. Her family members agreed with her and did online research to know the ideal condition for saffron cultivation.

After getting success, she further added that ‘I wanted to do something different and give a unique identity to Mainpuri. The first thing that came to my mind was a mushroom, but many people were already involved in it. In fact, saffron was very special; its demand is high but supply is low.
