Kullu’s Granny Smith apples outshine other varieties in Delhi markets

New Delhi: Granny Smith apples, commonly known as green apples, have been gaining popularity among Delhiites for their exclusive quality and appearance. This variety is grown in Himachal Pradesh, and since its arrival in the market, it has created a buzz in Delhi’s Azadpur fruit market. In fact, the prices of other apples are gradually dipping owing to the arrival of apples from Kashmir.

Despite this, the Granny Smith apples are available at higher prices. A lot of interest has shown buyers in this variety of apples, which are being available for Rs 120 per kg. Pankaj Thakur, a gardener from Jari in Kullu district, sent 400 boxes (10 kg each) of Granny Smith apples to Azadpur market, where they are available for Rs 1200 per box.

The price of Granny Smith apples was low last year; they sold for Rs 1000 to Rs 1100, but this year the price has touched Rs 1200. Interestingly, Pankaj has 150 Granny Smith trees in his garden. The variety of this apple, which originated in Australia in 1868, contains low sugar levels in comparison to others.

They produce a high yield and have a long shelf life, staying fresh for one to two months even at room temperature. The trees grow three times faster than other varieties, and the apples are less likely to suffer from rusting or fungus.

Due to their unique quality, Kullu’s Granny Smith apples are in high demand, especially in five-star hotels in Delhi, NCR. Each year, both the demand and supply of this premium apple variety are growing.
