Himachal govt plans to introduce green tax to combat pollution

Shimla: Pollution has created havoc across the country. Not to talk of central government, even state governments have been trying to reduce the pollution at any cost so that keep the environment clear. Winter has started knocking on the door, and during this period pollution level increases. Himachal Pradesh has been planning to introduce a green tax when vehicle owners apply for pollution certificates.

This green tax will push the cost of getting a pollution certificate by 20 to 40 rupees. As per the official report, the money collected from green tax will be used for environmental protection as well as road safety. After the implementation of this rule, two-wheelers and three-wheelers will have to charge Rs 20 more, while four-wheelers need to pay Rs 30 extra as a green tax.

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Section 190(2)), all fuel-powered vehicles must have a valid pollution certificate. If not, vehicle owners can face a fine. A pollution certificate for a new vehicle is valid for one year, and after renewal, it remains valid for six months.

At present, vehicle owners of two- and three-wheelers have to pay Rs 80, while four-wheelers pay Rs 110. If the green tax rates are implemented, then the cost of the pollution certificate will go up by Rs 20 to 40. It depends on the kind of vehicles.
