Telangana govt pushes farmers to shift to horticulture

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister of Telangana Tummala Nageswara Rao has been stressing to increase fruits and vegetables in the state. Therefore, he wants that farmers need to shift from traditional farming and be ready to adopt the horticulture sector. So he asked to promote horticultural crops as part of diversification by reducing the area of paddy cultivation that is increasing in the state.

He went on to say this recently during a meeting with Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University’s new vice chancellor, Dr. Danda Rajireddy. They met in Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao’s chamber, where discussion on high yields in the horticulture sector took place.

On this occasion, the Minister further stated that the best way to increase farmers’ incomes is by cultivating multiple crops on the same land. Later, he mentioned taking the help from farmers so that university students can get practical knowledge. The minister went on to say that farmers should be trained to cultivate fruits, vegetables, and spices in a multi-storied manner.

He stressed that there is a need to encourage farmers to plant palm oil and other garden crops as an alternative to rice. He said that horticultural crops are the way to return the investment to the farmer in a short period.
