Farmers fetch huge income with rising flower prices on Diwali
Amaravati: Diwali has brought good fortune to flower farmers this year; flower prices are increasing over the past two days. Marigold flowers are now being sold up to Rs. 40 per kilogram; Chamanti flowers are available at Rs. 150 per kilogram; and button roses are fetching Rs. 200 per kilogram. Intense competition among florists has increased prices.
The farmers are thrilled with the price jump, especially as demand has grown for flowers from V. Kota due to their high quality. Flowers from this region are in demand at shrines across major cities, including Tirupati, Hyderabad, Srisailam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Madurai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata.

However, the recent rains have damaged many flower gardens, reducing the overall yield. As a result, competition among traders to buy flowers has further driven up prices. Just two weeks ago, farmers were struggling to sell their flowers due to low prices and were forced to leave unsold flowers by the roadside. Now, traders are queuing up to buy flowers directly from the gardens.
During Diwali, flowers like Chamanti and roses are essential for worshiping Goddess Lakshmi, as well as for decorating homes and shops. Garlands of marigold are often placed at doorways, and special floral decorations add a festive charm to businesses and homes. The high demand has left common buyers shocked at the steep prices, with no strong price controls in place to regulate them.
