Horticulture Dept aims to plant orchards on 209 hectares in Jind

Jind: The horticulture department of Jind district, Haryana, has been trying to raise awareness among farmers about the benefits of orchard farming. The department has set a target to plant orchards on 209 hectares. Officials are frequently visiting villages to transmit knowledge to farmers on orchard management, encouraging them to venture into the horticulture sector. Officials are checking the previously planted orchards, guiding farmers on how to care for and provide necessary nutrients to trees.

The department has changed its policy this year, deciding to plant guava on 100 hectares, citrus fruits on 84 hectares, 4 hectares each for jujube and amla, and 2 and 15 hectares for sapota and peaches, respectively. To avail this facility, farmers have been asked to apply online. Grants will be provided on the basis of first come, first served.

Farmers planting citrus fruits will get a subsidy of Rs 32,500 per hectare; those sowing guava or other crops are eligible to get Rs 43,000 per hectare. Horticulture officials are spreading information in different villages through organizing camps, creating awareness among farmers about the advantages of horticultural crops compared to traditional farming. Farmers have fantastic opportunities to earn more through horticulture, strengthening their financial position as well.
