Three-day training on advanced vegetable cultivation held in Dindigul
Dindigul: A three-day training programme on “Methods of open and protected cultivation in vegetables” was held on Tuesday by the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel. The event took place at the Centre of Excellence in Reddiyarchatram, aiming to provide advanced methods of technology to farmers in cultivation so that they can improve vegetable production similar to export quality.
Uri Rubenstein, Agriculture Attache MASHAV, Embassy of Israel, said, “The center of excellence, Reddiyarchatram, which provides hands-on training to thousands of farmers in the region, was started in 2013 with the objective to encourage innovation in horticulture with the help of technology provided by Israel. This center will play an important role in the development of horticulture in the state.”

The center will help in the production of high-quality vegetable saplings of several vegetables, such as tomato, brinjal, chili, and cauliflower, in poly greenhouses to compare with world standards in horticulture. As per the Additional Director of Horticulture, Ram Prasad, the climate in Dindigul is highly favourable for growing diverse horticultural crops, making it an ideal location for the center of excellence.
Experts and others visited to inspect the center’s facilities and saw the vegetable saplings grown in a controlled environment. Under the India-Israel Action Plan (IIAP), provided the technical expertise, with infrastructure funding from the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH).
Experts from several states, like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Punjab, participated in this event and learned about advancements in the horticulture sector. The center of excellence has been continuously transmitting the latest horticultural technologies with the aim of growing production in various regions of the country.
