Barobisha village aims to boost tourism with flower farming

Alipurduar: A small tribal village near the famous Shil Bungalow in the Buxa Tiger Reserve (West Bengal) is set to transform into a “Flower Village.” Credit goes to Barobisha village for the development of eye-catching flowers in the region. The aim to develop the areas into a flower hub is to boost tourism as well as improve the income of the local tribal families. Earlier, farmers of Barobisha had to face challenges like crop damage due to elephants from the forest. Therefore, huge farming of flowers in the village will create opportunities to develop tourism and flower sales along with increasing the farmers as well.

The work is on the war footing to plant varieties of flower saplings. A bamboo-and-iron arch is being built at the village entrance, decorated with climbing plants like garlic vines and Begonia venusta. Flowering trees are being planted along the village roads, and flower-covered arbors are being set up in front of homes. Over 1,000 flowering tree species will be planted, promising a stunning display of nearly 50,000 blooms in the future.

The project also aims to enhance the appeal of Shil Bungalow, a historic wooden structure managed by the Forest Department. Although popular among tourists, the bungalow lacks proper promotion and management. Villagers hope the Flower Village will complement the bungalow and attract more visitors to the area.

Sanjay Bhagat, a young villager, shared his excitement: “If tourists visit the village, it will benefit everyone. We can build homestays, sell flower seedlings, and showcase our food and culture.” Time is not far away when Shil Bungalow, Barobisha, will be known for the bloom of vibrant flowers.
