Chandigarh MC approves to set up horticulture waste processing plant

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has approved two key projects to improve the city’s solid and liquid waste management systems. These include a horticulture waste processing plant in Industrial Area Phase-2 and a new sewerage treatment plant (STP) in Faidan village.

Currently, Chandigarh processes 12 tonnes of horticulture waste daily at an existing plant. Additionally, compost is made at 104 locations across city parks, with a combined capacity of 32 tonnes per day (TPD). However, leftover waste, such as garden waste and dry leaves, remains unprocessed.

To address this, a new processing plant with a 60 TPD capacity will be set up at a cost of Rs 4 crore in Industrial Area Phase-2. This plant will use biofuel briquetting technology to convert waste into compact bricks. The waste will be cleaned, ground, dried, and processed into briquettes.

The second project focuses on building an STP in Faidan village, located near the Chandigarh-Punjab border. The project, costing Rs 7 crore, will ensure proper treatment of wastewater. Currently, the village lacks a sewage network, and wastewater is discharged untreated into the Ghaggar River.

Since the land required for the STP belongs to the Chandigarh administration, the MC has requested its transfer at no cost. This step will close the treatment gap caused by wastewater from this densely populated area. Both projects aim to enhance environmental sustainability and align with National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines. The initiatives will significantly improve Chandigarh’s waste management capabilities.
