Yamuna Vatika: Delhi’s new green space for nature lovers

New Delhi: Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena recently unveiled a 494-acre ecological park, the Yamuna Vatika, in Old Rajinder Nagar. It is located opposite the Rajghat Power Plant. Credit should be given to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for the restoration of the Yamuna floodplains, boosting the green cover of the national capital. The vatika is going to be a boon for the nature lovers.

It is spread over an area of 200 hectares, aiming to make Delhi a green belt, which is essential in view of ongoing pollution issues. The park has been designed to cover a huge area into a green zone. The space is being developed with native tree species and riverine grasses that will help to support the area’s biodiversity.

Yamuna Vatika has been created with an aim to provide peace and tranquility to the people so that they can enjoy their leisure time in an eco-friendly atmosphere. Children have lots of spaces to play in open air. Proper seating arrangements as well as slopes are being created to welcome families and individuals to enjoy every moment of their time.

The six-acre floral plantation is another exclusive feature of the park with curving paths. Besides this, a 300-meter-long ‘Ecological Zone’ has been set up along the riverbank, making the environment healthy. Currently, it is estimated that at least 5,700 native trees and 52 lakh riverine grasses have been planted in the park, displaying the commitment of the DDA towards restoration of greenery.

This green space is likely to provide a lifeline for the densely populated Old Delhi residents, providing much-needed fresh air and connecting people with nature. The Yamuna Vatika is a positive step to create an important urban landscape in Delhi.
