Floriculture industry moves to green packaging
New Delhi: The global floriculture industry is growing rapidly, with increasing demand for fresh flowers. However, proper packaging is essential to keep flowers fresh and undamaged during transportation. Traditionally, plastic has been used for wrapping flowers, but it poses a serious environmental threat by increasing pollution.
Since 2023, the European Union has banned single-use plastics, including plastic packaging. A recent survey found that over 70% of people prefer sustainable packaging over plastic and are even willing to pay extra for eco-friendly alternatives. This has led to a growing need for environmentally friendly packaging in the floriculture industry.

Experts suggest that natural fabrics such as burlap, cotton, and linen are excellent alternatives. These materials are biodegradable and appeal to eco-conscious consumers who prefer sustainable packaging. Additionally, the use of cushion materials is being prioritized to keep flowers fresh for longer periods.
Cut flowers hold a significant place in the floriculture sector, and their freshness must be maintained post-harvest. Proper packaging can reduce waste and improve the industry’s sustainability. The shift towards eco-friendly packaging is not just a trend but a necessity to ensure a greener future.
As global exports of flowers continue to rise, the floriculture industry must embrace sustainable packaging solutions. By moving away from plastic and adopting natural materials, the industry can contribute to environmental conservation while meeting consumer demands for eco-friendly products.
