Shivpuri farmer earns lakhs through vegetable farming

Shivpuri: A progressive farmer from Shivpuri district, named Ravi Rawat, has adopted modern techniques in agriculture, cultivating high-value vegetables on his 25-acre land. Currently, he has been earning a huge amount of money, around Rs 50-75 lakh annually. He was determined to do something innovative, so he did research on farming methods and consulted agricultural experts. After gathering insights from experts, he decided to grow vegetables, focusing on tomatoes because it is an evergreen vegetable with high demand throughout the year.

To improve yield and quality, he introduced techniques such as plastic mulching, drip irrigation, and low tunnel farming. He also adopted a wire-and-bamboo support system for tomatoes, preventing soil contact and reducing fungal infections.

In addition to tomatoes, Ravi grows cucumbers, capsicum, green chilies, and okra. However, his off-season farming has brought him significant success. His capsicum and tomatoes are sold at nearly double the price during summer, fetching him a steady profit. He earns an impressive income of Rs 1-2 lakh per bigha. His strong market connections come from directly dealing with traders and securing bulk orders, especially during festivals, ensuring his strong presence in the market.

Ravi’s success has made him a role model in his region. As an expert, he advises his fellow farmers on adopting modern methods to boost production. Shivpuri district is now recognized for its vegetable production, especially for tomatoes and capsicum.
