China aims to curb severe air pollution by 2025
Beijing: China has prepared a blueprint for the elimination of severe air pollution by the end of the year. The country has left no stone unturned in reducing harmful emissions to keep the environment conducive for its people. The nation is determined to mitigate air pollution at any cost with the slogan “Battle for Blue Skies.”
Li Tianwei, Director of the Department of Atmospheric Environment, stated that China will improve its air quality forecasting systems and manage harmful airborne particles like PM2.5 and ozone pollution more effectively. “The battle for blue skies remains unchanged,” he said in a statement published on the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s website.

Air pollution is a serious issue in the country. Despite progress, it is still struggling to control pollution effectively. According to WHO data, about 2 million deaths occur in the country every year due to pollution.
The WHO considers PM2.5 levels above 50 micrograms per cubic meter as “severe” pollution. However, China’s air quality improved in 2024, with PM2.5 levels in cities averaging 29.3 micrograms per cubic meter, a 2.7% decrease from the previous year. The number of days with good air quality also increased to 87.2%.
China has decided to introduce a stricter emission strategy. The current government is set to boost the use of eco-friendly vehicles and machinery at airports, ports, and logistics centers. Furthermore, authorities aim to transport bulk goods mainly by rail instead of roads and waterways to decrease emissions.
President Xi Jinping explained that the goal of a modern socialist country is to promote greenery and create a healthy environment so that people can breathe easily.
