No art complex to be built inside Cubbon Park: Horticulture Department

Bengaluru: Cubbon Park in Bengaluru is known as one of the largest green spaces in the city. The Horticulture Department has made it clear that there will be no new construction, including an art complex, inside the park. This statement comes after complaints from regular visitors and public representatives about a possible concrete structure inside the park.

Park visitors grew worried when they learned that a private museum on M.G. Road had been planning to set up a five-acre art park inside Cubbon Park. Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan condemned this idea, stating that it would be a violation of the Karnataka Government Parks Act, 1975. He wrote a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, asking him to stop the proposed project. Through a social media post, he alleged that several powerful individuals were trying to use the park for commercial purposes to gain more profit.

However, Horticulture Department officials explained that such a proposal for the art park had never been submitted. Shamla Iqbal, Secretary to the Government, Horticulture Department, said that while the museum had discussed the idea, they never formally applied. She further confirmed that after internal discussions, the museum authorities decided to drop the plan and had recently sent a letter stating they would not pursue it further.

Nature lovers can now breathe a sigh of relief after the confirmation that no art complex will be built inside Cubbon Park and that it will remain untouched.
