Delhi LG, CM launch bamboo plantation drive at Bhalswa

New Delhi: Delhi LG V.K. Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly launched a bamboo plantation drive at the Bhalswa landfill site on Tuesday. This venture is expected to transform garbage dumps into green spaces and will improve the environment of the national capital. During the event, about 200 bamboo saplings were planted. It is expected that 54,000 more trees will be planted in the coming months.

Bamboo releases 30 percent more oxygen than other trees, therefore, it was selected for the plantation. It needs less water for proper growth. Its growth speed is fast so it covers the landfill site with greenery in a quick time.

Delhi LG Saxena said, “Today, we have planted 200 bamboo saplings. Soon, commuters will see lush green landscapes instead of garbage mounds”. He stressed that this project will certainly help in mitigating pollution levels in Delhi, making it a cleaner and greener city.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta praised the efforts of LG Saxena and the Central government in tackling the landfill crisis. She criticized the previous government for failing to address the issue effectively.

“The LG has been a strong leader, guiding Delhi towards development and protecting the city,” she said. She also highlighted the use of landfill waste in various Delhi projects, including DDA grounds. Gupta assured plantation drive would be monitored monthly.

Gupta further added that within one year this landfill will become a green zone. She promised that with the state and central cooperation, the project is likely to be completed at a rapid speed.

This venture is expected to create a cleaner and healthier environment for Delhi residents.
