Sunflowers gain popularity and become first choice among youths

Mumbai: There was a time when the demand for sunflowers was not high in the markets. Gradually things start changing, catching the eyes of people. Currently, this flower has stolen the show in the market. As per the florists report in Maharashtra and other cities of the country, the popularity of this flower has stunned everyone; now it is the first choice of people of all walks of life, especially the youngsters.

Credit goes to social media for changing this trend, making sunflower a big choice. Riddhi Chitre, 25, recently visited a sunflower field in Maharashtra and posted photos, calling sunflowers capable of making the life of an individual bright and beautiful. Her posts got a lot of likes. Unnati Mishra, a 22-year-old girl, is now becoming a fan of sunflowers. She prefers sunflowers to roses. She said that ‘sunflowers give her a unique feeling that lifts my mood.

Santosh, a flower seller, shares, “The demand for sunflowers was very low about a year ago, and people didn’t like to buy them. Now, I am selling almost 80-90 out of 100 daily.” Another vendor, Gopal Saini, says, “I did not stock sunflowers before. Now I have to keep 100-150 in stock daily due to the high demand. Its main buyers are young women.

Abhiram Maiti, a florist, noticed the shift in November 2024. “Earlier, I used to keep 10 bundles and hardly sold any. Now I have to stock 50 bundles, and most of them are being sold. He says that college students are the regular customers.

Another flower lover, Utkarshica Srivastava (28), believes that sunflowers are for everyone. She said, “I like this flower because it brings a smile to anyone’s face, and it can be gifted to friends, partners, and even parents as well’. Sunflowers are not like roses, which are gifted only to fiancés (lovers).

Shrey Sehgal, co-founder of a gifting platform, believes Millennials and Gen Z are drawn to sunflowers for their bright, authentic vibe. “They fit well with mental wellness themes and are perfect for DIYs and social sharing,” he explains. Sakshi Khandelwal, a noted florist, went on to say that the popularity of sunflowers is gaining during the wedding haldi and mehndi events, taking the place of lilies and marigolds.

Sunflowers have taken a long stride in a short period of time. They are not considered only flowers but rather a statement of bringing warmth and positivity into the life of an individual. That is why sunflowers have become the first choice of the flower lovers, especially youngsters.
