Cultivating Money at Home: Urban Farming in Delhi

To promote urban farming Delhi government will soon be distributing ‘Urban Farming DIY (Do It Yourself) Kits’ to empower people to grow vegetables on their own and earn money.
The Delhi government is trying to create 20 lakh job opportunities in the Capital. According to the Rozgar Budget presented by Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi stated that 25,000 new jobs will be created in the urban farming sector, particularly for women.
To initiate the scheme 10,000 DIY Kits will be distributed-5,000 for the summer season and 5,000 for the winter season. The kits will consist of 10 varieties of vegetable seeds, three types of biofertilizers, 1kg of organic manure and an information booklet on how to cultivate the seeds. The kit will have the tag and branding of the government scheme and the name of the environment and forest department, which runs the initiative.
Residents would also be trained on how to grow vegetables in small spaces.
Special committees, comprising the representatives of resident welfare associations, non-government organisations, self-help groups, women empowerment groups and environment enthusiasts will be formed. The scheme will also accommodate suggestions of the stakeholders to promote urban farming.
The Indian Agriculture Research Institute will help in imparting knowledge about vegetable and food farming in small spaces available in flats and houses and training the individuals. It will also train the individuals.
