Greening the Valleys: Uttarakhand’s Initiative to Utilize Unused Land for Pahadi Crops

New Delhi: To boost agricultural productivity and promote sustainable farming practices, the Uttarakhand government has announced plans to utilize unused valleys and lands for cultivating traditional Pahadi crops. The decision aims to not only enhance agricultural output but also preserve the state’s unique biodiversity and promote its rich cultural heritage.

Uttarakhand, known for its picturesque landscapes and diverse flora and fauna has long been a hub for traditional farming practices. However, due to various factors such as migration changing climatic conditions and the shift towards cash crops many of the state’s valleys and lands have remained unused or underutilized.

The initiative to revitalize these lands for Pahadi crop cultivation is seen as a step towards revitalizing the state’s rural economy and promoting sustainable agriculture. Pahadi crops, which are native to the region and well-suited to its terrain and climate.

It aims to not only increase their income but also ensure food security and promote healthy eating habits among the local populace. The cultivation of Pahadi crops is expected to reduce the state’s dependence on food imports and promote self-sufficiency in agriculture.

The government has also announced plans to provide farmers with training technical  and financial support to help them transition to Pahadi crop cultivation. This includes the provision of seeds fertilizers and other inputs at subsidized rates as well as the establishment of market linkages to ensure a fair price for their produce.
