A sigh of relief for Delhiites amid improvement in air quality

New Delhi: Delhi residents have experienced a sigh of relief on Monday due to a slight improvement in the air quality. This morning the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the national capital was recorded at 308, as per the data received from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Unfavourable weather conditions have led to a steep rise in the pollution levels over the last couple of days.

The air quality of Delhi’s neighbouring regions witnessed a sharp decline in air quality this morning. The air quality index (AQI) of three cities, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad, was recorded at 228, 183, and 193, respectively.

Here are the AQI categories: 0-50: Good, 51-100: Satisfactory, 101-200: Moderate, 201-300: Poor, 301-400: Very poor, 401-500: Severe.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) re-imposed Graded Response Action Plan (Grap) Stage III restrictions on January 29, due to the deterioration of air quality in the city. The restrictions will continue as the air quality of Delhi remains unstable.

Poor air quality has led to several pollution-related ailments, such as respiratory and lung infections. Children and older people are on the receiving end because whenever they go outside, most of the time they have a chance to face severe health issues. Therefore, long queues could be seen in hospitals.

IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Delhi on Monday. It is expected that light rainfall may occur today. This may help in the drop of pollution levels and improvement in the air quality.
