A stitch in time…: UP Govt’s preparations ahead of monsoon ensures minimal loss of life & plants

Noida/Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath distributed a total of 69,726 food grains packets and 4,65,048 lunch packets in flood affected districts of Uttar Pradesh and set up 1,310 flood relief centres across 84 tehsils in 20 severely affected districts. Additionally, over 2,647 medical teams were formed to provide essential healthcare services to the people in flood-hit districts.
It is worth mentioning here that the Chief Minister held a review meeting even before the onset of monsoon to prepare the administration for floods as well as conducted aerial and ground inspections later on to assess the damage and provide relief to people living in flood-affected areas. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth visited the flood-hit regions, interacted with the affected people and meticulously examined the arrangements made for them.

According to the data of the Indian Meteorological Department, 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh have experienced excessive rainfall this year, exceeding 120 per cent of the expected rainfall, between June 1 and September 15. Most of these districts are situated in Western Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, more than normal rainfall i.e. 120 to 80 percent has been recorded in 24 districts of the state, including those in Western and Central UP and Bundelkhand. Meanwhile, 31 districts have received normal rainfall, ranging from 80 to 40 per cent. On the contrary, 7 districts have received less than normal rainfall, amounting to less than 40 per cent.
Relief Commissioner GS Naveen Kumar said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had held a review meeting on flood relief efforts even before the onset of monsoon. During this meeting, the CM emphasized the need for being prepared to provide comprehensive assistance to both people and livestock in flood-affected areas.
Yogi further directed officials to make thorough preparations in advance to minimize the loss of life. All this resulted in massive relief works in 37 flood-affected districts of the state, leading to minimal loss of life.
The Relief Commissioner said that 37 districts of the state experienced higher-than-normal rainfall, with 34 districts being directly impacted by floods. Among these, 20 districts faced particularly severe flooding, prompting urgent relief efforts. These heavily affected districts comprised 14 of Western Uttar Pradesh including Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Farrukhabad, Saharanpur, Agra, Amroha, Meerut, Baghpat, Mathura, Shamli, Badaun, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Shahjahanpur, and Ghaziabad. Additionally, five districts in the Awadh region, including Barabanki, Kheri, Hardoi, Gonda, and Sitapur, were affected by floods. Purvanchal’s Basti district also witnessed significant flooding.

In order to provide relief to five lakh people residing in 1287 villages across 84 affected tehsils in these districts, a total of 1310 flood posts were established. Additionally, 2647 medical teams were deployed to address medical-related issues. To ensure that flood victims did not face food shortages, 69,726 food packets were distributed during this period, along with 4,65,048 lunch packets. Among the districts heavily affected by floods, Farrukhabad ranked first, with 75,453 people from 116 villages affected by it. In response, 52 flood posts were established and 1003 medical teams were formed, he added.
