Anantapur emerges as horticulture export hub

Anantapur: Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur has made rapid progress in the horticulture sector under the dynamic leadership of District Collector Dr. Vinod Kumar. He made a lot of efforts in the setting up of cold storage, warehousing, product grading, and other support systems in the district for the improvement of crop productivity . Currently, 25 unique fruit varieties are being grown in the district due to Vinod’s determination.

Anantapur recently organized a national workshop on horticulture. The event brought horticulturists, experts, and export industries on one platform to discuss the growth of horticulture in the district. How to address the difficulties of the farmers?

Dr. Vinod Kumar is engaged with the leading e-commerce organization Flipkart, helping village farmers to sell their produce easily and earn good incomes. The formation of Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) under the National Horticulture Mission has helped farmers to get better markets. The state government has been sending several FPO leaders to other nations to learn overseas practices.

Anantapur has already started exporting bananas to the Middle East and Europe, aiming to cover bigger markets all over the world. Vinod recently had a meeting with the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu; both recognized that horticulture and tourism are the two sectors that can make the district economically sound.

Anantapur has now become an example that shrewd leadership and providing timely support to farmers will bring changes in rural India and the horticulture sector as well.
