Assam farmer relies on natural farming to boost production
Guwahati: A 42-year-old farmer from Dhemaji District, Assam, named Bhuban Pegu, started his vegetable journey at the tender age of 15. He started growing commercial vegetable and fruit farming in 2015. Currently, he has been growing chillies, tomatoes, and strawberries. Besides this, he grows organic papaya in his 4-bigha land. He plants crops as per the quality of soil and climatic conditions, aiming for high productivity. He relies on natural and organic solutions instead of pesticides and fertilizers.
Bhuban uses high-yield seeds, fetching him huge productivity. He gets water through a water pump. He says that vegetables need less water. The state government has approved the installation of solar water pumps, especially on Bhuban’s farms.

He sells his production in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. His presence in the local market is strong. He has been planning to take his product to the national market. Currently, he has been earning around Rs 15 lakh in a year through his vegetable and fruit production.
He said that education plays a key role in modern agriculture and horticulture. Educated farmers learn modern techniques easily in less time. They handle the advanced machine easily compared to illiterate farmers. They easily adopted innovative technology.
Bhuban’s journey has made it clear that sustainable farming is vital for the fruitful growth of the horticulture sector. He further added that farmers’ need inspiration, and they need to adopt organic farming methods for increasing their production and enhancing their incomes as well.
