Baheradih women turn to marigold farming for Diwali business
Baheradih: Diwali is around the corner. The demand for flowers increases during this festival. Women in the village of Baheradih, located in the Janjgir-Champa district, Chhattisgarh, have been trying their best to yield more and more marigold flowers due to the surge of demand during the festival of lights. They will cultivate flowers nearby the festival, fetching handsome earnings from such women.
One of the women, Laxmi Yadav, admitted that the demand for premium marigold remains high during Diwali. These women were inspired after seeing the profits of the nursery’s decorative plants, flowers, and organic fertilizers two years ago. The Rural Self-Employment Training Institute run by the SBI in Janjgir arranged free training for the 35 unemployed women of the village on vegetable farming and nursery management.

The women went on to establish nurseries and started yielding flowers after getting training. The women of this village are growing different kinds of attractive plants, fruits, flowers, lemongrass, and so on in their respective nurseries. Last year, such women made a good income, especially during the time of Diwali.
The head of the Farmers’ School, Dindayal Yadav, stated that several people from the other villages come here to purchase organic fertilizer and visit the school as well. Vermicompost has been produced here for the last eight years, and its demand is high, selling at 10 rupees per kg.
The demand for organic fertilizers has been increasing because farmers use it in decorative, fruit, and medicinal plants. Therefore, setting up a nursery is a flourishing business in this village, and women are running plant nurseries and organic fertilizer successfully.
