Chandigarh Seeks to Imitate Mumbai’s Horticulture Waste Plant

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is looking at reproducing the Mumbai model for setting up its first horticulture waste processing plant in the city. MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra, Chief Engineer NP Sharma and Superintending Engineer Krishan Pal Singh will visit Mumbai to study and know the details of the model after the Smart City conference on 18-19 April. Later on, the project will be open for tender.
The plant will be set up on 1.5 acres at 3BRD within the premises of the existing STP site belonging to the MC.
A shredder is used to cut horticultural waste into small pieces and then using a hydraulic press, small ingots are made. As a fuel, these ingots of pure wood fibre will be sold to furnaces. To collect and transport horticulture waste from sectors, the department will purchase tractor-trailers.
The project will cost approximately Rs. 3.5 crore, which will include the construction of a boundary wall and a shed for the plant.
In May the tender process is expected to begin. Every day, the city generates seven to eight tonnes of horticulture waste. During autumn and spring, when trees shed their leaves, over 80 tonnes of waste are generated per day.
