Chandigarh’s Horticulture, Plastic Waste to be Processed at New Integrated Plant

Chandigarh creates around 8 tons of agricultural waste each day, yet it goes as much as 80 tons each day during spring and harvest time when trees shed leaves.
As per MC’s unique arrangement, a devoted waste processing plant, costing around ₹3.5 crores and having the ability to handle 50 tons of agriculture/horticulture waste each day, was moved toward 1.5 sections of land of MC land at 3BRD anywhere nearby of the current sewerage treatment plant site.

For plastic waste, the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) Rules will now be used by MC, as notified by the Union government.
The guidelines on plastic packaging under plastic waste management rules, 2016, provided a framework to strengthen the circular economy of plastic packaging waste, promote the development of new alternatives to plastics and provide further steps for moving towards sustainable plastic packaging by businesses.

It has been mandated in the guidelines to reduce the use of fresh plastic material for packaging purposes. The reuse of plastic has been emphasized. In order to prevent the mixing of plastic packaging waste with solid waste producers, importers and brand owners are advised to operate schemes such as deposit-refund system or buyback or any other model.
