Chennai introduces mechanized street-washing to curb dust pollution
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has begun numerous projects to curb dust pollution, particularly from roads and construction sites, aiming to improve the city’s air quality this summer. The first time a mechanized street-washing vehicle will be used to remove dust from the roads. It is being used in Bengaluru. In the beginning the suction sweepers are to be used for removing dust and dirt; after that, the spray machine will sprinkle water to settle the dust.
GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said the city has decided to replace the old-style road sweeping. The corporation is looking to purchase 20 such kinds of machines for smooth and better work. Currently, GCC has been cleaning bus shelters and footpaths using water sprays. GCC has promised to make the city green, planting more trees and improving park conditions nearby roads.

Another uphill task for the civic body is managing demolition waste. Construction sites will have to install tin or metal barricades, 6 meters high for small sites and 10 meters for larger ones. During the demolition, water must be sprayed to keep the dust under control. Trucks need to cover the waste material, and they should not be overloaded.
“These actions are what cities like Delhi and Mumbai are doing,” the Commissioner said. “These efforts will keep Chennai green and avoid bad air.” He further added that people who fail to follow the rules will be fined with immediate effect.
With these initiatives, the residents of Chennai are hoping to get clean air this summer, and the environment is expected to be greener, which would be healthy for the people of the city.
