Chittoor conclave pushes to make district ‘Mango Capital’ of world

Chittoor: Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district organized a horticulture conclave on Friday to boost mango productivity in the district. On this occasion, mango farmers, buyers, traders, and key industry leaders gathered and shared their views on what to do to boost yield. District administration organized the event, aiming to make Chittoor the ‘Mango Capital’ not of India but of the world. The conclave focused on the adaptation of new farming techniques, how to address challenges, and creating better market opportunities.

Srinivas, State Director of Horticulture and Sericulture, said that the mango cultivation area in Chittoor has enlarged, but per-acre productivity is still low. “The overall mango production in Andhra Pradesh is 12 metric tonnes per hectare, while it is 15 in Gujarat and 25 metric tonnes in Brazil,” he said. He went on to say that making the orchard modernize is essential along with controlling pests and using bio-fertilizers.

District Collector Sumit Kumar said that mangoes are the backbone for 75,000 farmers in Chittoor. Farmers earn from the farming of mangoes. The cultivation of mango takes place on 70,000 hectares out of the 90,000 hectares of horticultural land. He further added many farmers have left the traditional farming, and they are growing mangoes to get better incomes.

MLA K. Murali Mohan praised the government’s initiatives, such as MGNREGS, providing free mango seedlings along with irrigation facilities. In this conclave, officials, experts, and the farming community from all over the country actively took part. Scientists suggested what to do and how to do it for boosting mango yield in the district, which will increase farmers’ profits as well.
