Citizens protest against New Year celebrations at Cubbon Park

Bengaluru: People are aware these days regarding parks and the environment. Therefore, a group of concerned citizens and activists organized a peaceful candlelight protest in front of Bal Bhavan on Sunday evening, demanding that there should not be New Year celebrations planned by clubs around Cubbon Park. Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association started the protest, urging the government to cancel the events, citing violations of park rules and threats to wildlife.

The association highlighted that the Cubbon Park Conservation Committee, led by the principal secretary of horticulture, has strictly prohibited activities like alcohol consumption, smoking, loud music, and bursting crackers within the park. Despite these rules, some clubs inside the park are planning grand New Year parties.

Umesh Kumar, president of the Walkers’ Association, expressed concern over these violations. “The clubs’ activities disturb bird migration, harm the ecosystem, and create noise pollution. People also gather late at night, causing further disruptions. A strict program is needed to protect the park,” he said.

Activist Alexander James added, “Cubbon Park is a peaceful retreat for many people. However, celebrations organized by clubs lead to trash, pollution, and damage to the environment. Such activities should not be allowed.”

The protesters asked the concerned authorities to take action as soon as possible for the safety and preservation of the park’s natural beauty and calmness.
