Colombia’s floriculture sector faces 50% tariff threats
Bogotá: Colombian flowers are famous across the world; flowers from here were considered the decorative pieces on the shelves of supermarkets in the USA. Fresh roses, carnations, and other blooms used to get placed in US homes, shops, and hotels. The South African nation is the second-largest exporter of cut flowers worldwide and the number one supplier to the USA.
However, the flower industry has been passing through a tough phase in Colombia, as US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Colombian imports, including flowers. This is a big issue; local growers are under pressure due to huge tariffs. Trade is not the only issue to be addressed; the important thing is how the flower industry will sustain itself after the imposition of tariffs.
