Cosmos blooms in decline at Chug Valley; locals blame excessive human activity
West Kameng: Chug Valley, situated in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng District, is known for its breathtaking beauty. It has recently gained recognition for its stunning landscape and rich cultural heritage. This picturesque valley, located 50 kilometers from Bomdila, was awarded the 2nd Best Tourism Village Award 2024 by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The award highlights the valley’s incredible views, traditional architecture, and vibrant local culture.
One of Chug Valley’s most famous attractions is its Cosmos flowers, which bloom in a sea of pink and white during September and October. Tourists and locals alike flock to the valley to witness the beautiful flowers, set against the backdrop of lush green mountains and flowing rivers. However, the number of flowers has declined in recent years. Areas that were once covered by Cosmos flowers have begun to shrink, and the meadows are no longer as dense as they used to be.

Excessive human interference is one of the reasons for this decline, as per the local residents. Visitors often pluck flowers for decoration or bouquets, which disrupts the natural breeding process. Additionally, many visitors engage in activities such as running and playing within the flower meadows, further disturbing the delicate ecosystem.
