Delhi govt plans to conduct artificial rain to combat air pollution
New Delhi: Delhi’s air pollution is still a core issue despite the coming of the new government. The situation has not improved. Seeing the gravity of the situation, the Rekha Gupta government has been planning to use artificial rain to curb rising pollution in the city, working with IIT Kanpur. Cloud seeding is a method when chemicals are sprayed into clouds. This technique may be used in the national capital next month.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa held a high-level meeting on Thursday to discuss this plan. Experts from IIT Kanpur explained how the cloud seeding process works and shared that past experiments in India have been mostly successful. The minister asked all departments to speed up approvals needed from aviation authorities like the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and the Airport Authority of India. If all goes well, a test may be conducted in May. “We are fighting a war against air pollution in Delhi and are committed to finding solutions for clean air,” said Sirsa.

During the marathon meeting, officials from several agencies, such as the Central Pollution Control Board, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and others, were present. The minister looked annoyed with the dust at construction sites. He said that it is essential to follow a 14-point action plan, which includes the use of anti-smog guns, green nets, cleaning vehicles, and managing construction waste properly.
Dust plays a key role in the rise of pollution levels in Delhi, responsible for a surge of 30%. The government thinks that these initiatives will help in mitigating pollution levels in the city.
