Delhi govt plans to dismantle old vehicles to combat air pollution
New Delhi: The air quality of Delhi is likely to be in the poor category in the coming winter again. The Delhi government has taken several steps before the arrival of winter to cope with the air pollution. In this regard, Delhi is ready to open its first registered vehicle scrapping facility (RVSF) to dismantle older vehicles so that pollution levels can be controlled.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has classified that older vehicles cause a moderate level of pollution. But in the end, it contributes a lot to increasing air pollution. The DPCC has given permission to private companies that want to run these facilities.

At present, the national capital doesn’t have any vehicle scrapping facilities, so the old vehicles are being sent to nearby states for scrapping. A DPCC official went on to say that the government has been planning to seize such kinds of old vehicles during the upcoming winter because the popularity of electric vehicles has been increasing. The committee has decided to allow scrapping facilities to operate in the city.
Currently, over 5 million old vehicles have been operating on Delhi roads. Overall, 15,401 vehicles have been seized in 2023 and 2024. The Commission for Air Quality Management informed the Supreme Court that, while crop stubble burning has reduced by 50% in the last three years, the large number of old vehicles continues to increase, so Delhi govt plans to dismantle old vehicles to mitigate air pollution.
