New Delhi: Delhi’s LG VK Saxena urged the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to use jute carpets on pathways and tracks in parks, especially along the Yamuna floodplain. It was used for the first time in Asita Park near ITO; after experiencing its positive results, such as reduction of dust and helping in the growth of grass. The jute carpets have been successfully stacked to the ground, reducing dust flying in the air.
Saxena had previously banned concretization on the floodplain, but this led to increased dust, especially when walkers and cyclists used the tracks. To address this, Saxena proposed using loosely knitted jute carpets, which have successfully reduced dust and supported grass growth in pilot projects like Asita Park. Based on this success, Saxena has now instructed DDA to extend the use of jute carpeting to tracks in the Northern Ridge, which DDA is currently restoring.

Spreading the jute carpet will help in mitigating dust pollution and preventing soil erosion. Besides this, the use of jute gives a shot in the arm to local farmers to grow jute. This will promote this industry. Saxena has been aiming to make the environment of Delhi NCR eco-friendly, addressing both the floodplain’s environmental challenges and supporting local agriculture.
However, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has presented a comprehensive plan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for rejuvenating the Yamuna River. This plan includes complete sewerage treatment, removal of encroachments, and beautification of the riverfront, with restoration efforts already underway across 16,000 hectares on both sides of the river.
This initiative is likely to be completed by 2025, hoping to improve Yamuna’s health and its surroundings. People will get a chance to walk in the green and healthy atmosphere. Additionally, the income of jute farmers will also boost.
