Delhi’s air quality plunges to ‘poor’ category; residents at health risk
New Delhi: Pollution and dust have hovered in Delhi, which led to ‘poor’ air quality for the third consecutive day. Last week the air quality was in the ‘moderate’ category. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital’s AQI was recorded at 233 on Wednesday. Delhi residents are at health risk due to rising pollution. Respiratory diseases and lung infections are on the rise.
The air quality in nearby towns has also deteriorated. The AQI of nearby cities of several cities on April 8 was as such: Gurugram recorded 204, Noida 193, and Greater Noida 242. Some improvement was seen in Ghaziabad with an AQI of 185, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category.

Seeing the gravity of the situation, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) from April 2. Vehicles are being checked strictly so that they can follow pollution rules and make the traffic management smooth to decrease jams. Brick kilns and construction sites have been asked to follow pollution control procedures.
With the rising pollution levels and heatwaves, Delhiites have to remain cautious in this situation. Experts say that people need to remain indoors and go outside only for work or in case of emergency. Never forget to wear a mask. Drink plenty of water to beat the heatwave, and try to avoid outdoor activities during the peak hours. Children and senior citizens should take extra precaution. They are more vulnerable to pollution and poor air quality.
