Dept of Agriculture’s Latest Figures: Final Estimates of 2022-23 and 1st Advance Estimates of 2023-24 for Horticultural Production
New Delhi: The Department of Agriculture has recently released the final estimates for the 2022-23 horticultural production year as well as the first advance estimates for the 2023-24 season. These estimates provide valuable insights into the trends and projections for the horticultural sector in India.
According to the final estimates for 2022-23 the total horticultural production is estimated to be around 320 million metric tones showcasing a modest growth of 2.5% compared to the previous year. This growth can be attributed to various factors including favorable weather conditions improved agricultural practices and increased adoption of technology in horticulture.

Among the key horticultural crops fruits have shown a significant increase in production with an estimated growth rate of 4.5% compared to the previous year. This growth is driven by increased cultivation areas better yield management and improved post-harvest practices. Vegetables on the other hand have shown a slight decline in production primarily due to erratic weather patterns and pest infestations in some regions.
Moving on to the first advance estimates for the 2023-24 season the Department of Agriculture projects a promising outlook for the horticultural sector. The total horticultural production is estimated to reach around 330 million metric tons reflecting a growth rate of 3.1% compared to the previous year.
Fruits are expected to continue their growth trajectory with a projected increase of 5% in production. This growth is supported by ongoing efforts to expand fruit cultivation areas enhance crop management practices and promote export-oriented production. Vegetables too are expected to bounce back with an estimated growth rate of 3% as farmers adopt resilient varieties and sustainable farming practices.
The final estimates for 2022-23 and the first advance estimates for 2023-24 highlight the resilience and potential of the horticultural sector in India. With continued government support technological advancements and strategic interventions the horticultural sector is poised for further growth contributing significantly to food security rural livelihoods and economic development.
