New Delhi. The IDF Diabetes Atlas (2021) reports that 10.5% of the adult population (20-79 years) has diabetes, with almost half unaware that they are living with the condition. Prevalence has been rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries.

Diabetes is a chronic condition brought on by either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas or inefficient insulin utilization by the body. A hormone called insulin controls blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes frequently causes hyperglycemia, also known as high blood glucose or raised blood sugar, which over time can seriously harm many different bodily systems, including the neurons and blood vessels.

In view of the increasing problem of diabetes, scientists keep searching for ways to reduce the blood sugar level in the body. Taking care of your diet can effectively balance your sugar level. In such a situation, you can consume Kombucha tea. Kombucha also known as tea mushroom, tea fungus, or Manchurian mushroom when referring to the culture and Latin name Medusomyces gisevii is a tea fermented with bacteria and yeast. It has been used in China since 200BC. Its consumption has many health benefits, especially in controlling blood sugar level.

Recent studies have seen reduction in the fasting blood sugar level of diabetes patients consuming kombucha tea for 4 weeks. This research was done by Professor Dan Merenstein of Georgetown University School of Medicine, which included total of 12 people. It has been found that it lowers the level of sugar in the blood. In this study, people were given approximately eight ounces of kombucha or a placebo drink for four weeks and for the next two months, another group was given kombucha and a placebo.

Kombucha also contains antioxidants, can kill harmful bacteria, and may help fight several diseases. Study shows that consuming kombucha lowered blood sugar by 164 to 116 milligrams per decilitre one month. This finding proves it to be a better option as an alternative to sugar-rich beverages. It can “reduce appetite and curb sugar cravings”.

Kombucha has been considered a healthy drink since a long time. It has the ability to strengthen the immune system and improve energy levels. It also helps in reducing the inflammation of the intestine. It is also claimed for treating AIDS, aging, arthritis, Atherosclerosis, cancer and constipation.
