Dry spell in Chamba: Tips for apple orchard care

Chamba: Chamba is experiencing a prolonged dry spell, prompting the Horticulture Department to issue special advice to apple growers in the region. Officials have recommended steps to protect orchards and conserve water during these challenging times.

Farmers have been advised to avoid tilling and fertilising their orchards while the dry conditions persist. Instead, they should use organic mulch like grass clippings, straw, or leaves around apple plants. This helps retain soil moisture and control temperature.

Dr. Pramod Shah, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, highlighted the importance of moisture retention. “Using wet grass or mulch can significantly reduce evaporation and regulate soil temperature. Avoid tilling and create a protective layer around the plants,” he said.

Efficient irrigation methods like drip or sprinkler systems have been recommended to conserve water. The department also suggested adding organic matter to the soil to improve its ability to retain water. Pruning unwanted or diseased branches is encouraged to reduce the water needs of plants. Apple cultivation is a significant livelihood in areas like Bharmour, Salooni, Churah, and Pangi.

Meanwhile, a tragic forest fire in Churah’s Gadfari Panchayat has destroyed over 100 apple trees in an orchard. The fire, which started on Thursday morning near Banjwad village, quickly spread and gutted the orchard owned by Khair Mohammad.

“I had nurtured these trees for over five years. Everything turned to ash before my eyes,” he said, recounting the devastation.

Panchayat head Laldeen confirmed the incident and assured that the administration would be informed to seek financial assistance for the orchardist. “The loss is significant, and we will appeal for compensation,” he added.

The dry spell and recent fire highlight the pressing challenges faced by orchardists in the region, underscoring the need for swift support and proactive measures.
