Farmers in Distress: India’s Onion and Potato Yields Expected to Decline
New Delhi: India, one of the world’s largest producers of onions and potatoes is bracing for a significant drop in production this year. According to the latest estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, onion production is expected to decline by over 15%, while potato production is projected to decrease by 2%.
The decline in onion production is primarily attributed to adverse weather conditions, including unseasonal rains and hailstorms in key producing regions such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. These weather events have not only damaged standing crops but also hindered planting activities leading to a reduced harvest.

Potato production is likely to be impacted by various factors including water scarcity in some regions fluctuating temperatures and pest infestations. These challenges have contributed to a lower-than-expected yield prompting concerns among farmers and policymakers.
Agricultural experts and industry stakeholders are calling on the government to take proactive measures to support farmers and mitigate the impact of the production shortfall. They emphasize the need for timely intervention to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supply in the market.
One of the proposed measures is the implementation of effective crop insurance schemes to provide financial protection to farmers in case of crop failure. Experts suggest enhancing storage and processing facilities to minimize post-harvest losses and improve market access for farmers.
There are calls for the government to offer incentives and subsidies to encourage farmers to adopt modern farming practices including the use of high-yield varieties efficient irrigation methods and pest management techniques. These initiatives are seen as crucial for enhancing productivity and ensuring food security in the country.
In response to the challenges faced by farmers the government has indicated its commitment to supporting the agriculture sector. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare announced various initiatives aimed at providing relief to farmers affected by adverse weather conditions and other challenges.
Stakeholders emphasize the need for sustained efforts and long-term planning to address the underlying issues affecting agricultural productivity. They stress that a comprehensive approach encompassing technology adoption infrastructure development and policy support is essential to safeguard the interests of farmers and ensure the sustainability of the agriculture sector.
