Flower farming brings prosperity to Nandyal farmers

Nandyal: One meeting conducted by the Horticulture Department changed the life of Narayana, a small farmer from Gajulapalle village in Nandyal district. Earlier, he had been facing several problems, such as heavy debt, crop losses, and so on. He received tips on flower farming and started growing chrysanthemums. Gradually, his flowers gained name and fame; traders from Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu ventured into his village to buy them. His success story encouraged many local farmers, who also stepped into floriculture and horticulture farming.

District Collector Rajakumar Ganiya inspired numerous farmers to adopt horticulture. They followed his advice and are now earning good incomes. The Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, once considered one of the most backward and drought-prone areas, has now become the leading flower-producing district in the state.

Narayana says he has been earning a handsome income from flowers as well as from selling chilli and flower saplings during other months. He adopted modern techniques such as polyhouse farming and drip irrigation. He produces flowers 15 times in one season, with prices ranging from Rs 150 to Rs 300 per kg.

Harinath Reddy, another nursery owner, said that even a price of Rs 80–100 per kg is sufficient for farmers to earn a good income. The demand for flowers increases during the wedding season. The state government has been providing a 90% subsidy for drip irrigation, which has made it easier for farmers to switch to floriculture.

Horticulture officials have urged support for other farmers so that they too can grow flowers and boost their profits. The district collector has asked the Horticulture Department to come forward and actively support farmers in choosing horticulture or floriculture, which are more beneficial for them.
