Flower market soars in China amid lunar New Year celebrations

Beijing: Chinese New Year to be celebrated on February 15, 2025. The sale of flowers has been growing, especially cut flowers, adding a festive touch for the upcoming New Year. The flower sale in the entire nation has gone up. The Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, Yunnan Province, which is considered the largest fresh cut flower market in Asia, has seen a steep rise in their demand and prices since January.

Markets in China are packed with varieties of flowers due to coming festivals such as New Year, Spring Festival, and Lantern Festival. The average price of flowers saw a 40 percent jump compared to last year. According to Zhu Qi, the planning manager of the Kunming International Flower Auction Trading Center in Dounan, the fresh-cut flower price index rose significantly from 273 points before the Spring Festival to 661 points in February.

The center witnessed a hike in flower trading volume of 4.5 million flower stems, with the highest single-day sales exceeding 6 million stems from February 5 to 13. The price per stem has reached from 5 yuan to 7 yuan. The rate of other kinds of flowers, like lisianthus, carnations, lilies, and tulips, also saw a jump.

Dounan’s retail flower market has been experiencing great business, selling around 190 million stems during the Spring Festival, generating money worth 288 million yuan. It is expected that more than 40,000 visitors are visiting the Dounan Flower Market every day, so it has now become a tourist hub. A sharp jump could be seen in the online flower sales as well.
