Get better growth through soilless Gerbera farming

New Delhi: Gerbera is a well-known flowering plant from the Asteraceae family; it is widely loved for its bright and colourful blooms. Traditionally, the flower is being grown in soil, but farmers have to face several issues such as poor drainage, pest attacks, and nutrient imbalances. However, a new method has been created, soilless cultivation, which is making Gerbera farming easier and more efficient.

Soilless farming is an eco-friendly way to grow plants without using soil. Instead, special growing materials like coco peat, perlite, and vermiculite are used. These materials provide proper aeration, store enough moisture, and help plants absorb nutrients better. This method is especially useful for controlled environments like polyhouses, balconies, and rooftops.

A balanced mixture of coco peat, perlite, and vermiculite is prepared at least two weeks before planting. Coco peat is first soaked in water for two hours, drained, and dried in the shade to lower its alkalinity. Clay balls are also soaked for 24 hours and dried. To prevent diseases, the entire mixture is sterilized with a fungicide like 0.1% Bavistin.

Gerbera plants grown through tissue culture are commonly used because they grow uniformly and resist diseases. The seedlings are planted with the top part of their roots slightly above the medium’s surface. They are then watered lightly to settle them.

Drip irrigation is required to keep the moisture in the plant. Fertilizers help the plant grow healthy. Farmers need to inspect their plants regularly. Maintaining the right temperature and humidity ensures better growth and blooming.
