Greenery Getting Grounded in the Towers of Development
At least three trees are being cut every hour in Delhi in the name of greenery development schemes. The irony is that even out of the trees that have been transplanted, only one-third of the trees are left alive by the Forest Department. According to government data submitted to the Delhi High Court, 77 thousand trees have been allowed to be cut or transplanted for development works in the capital in the last three years, of which 29,946 under Section 9 of the Delhi Forest Conservation Act (DPT A) while the Act-4, 7,474 trees allowed to be cut or transplanted under section 29.
The situation of 3 years:
16,461 trees were transplanted. Only 33.33 per cent of the trees survived. 4,09,046 saplings were instructed to plant by different agencies. 1,58,522 plants were planted by the agencies.
Permission to cut 77,000 trees has been given in the last 3 years and permission has been given to plant 689 trees by the North Forest Department.
