Grow nutmeg at home with simple steps
New Delhi: Among the spices, nutmeg keeps a special place in Indian kitchens due to its unique taste and numerous health benefits. Nutmeg can be grown in a pot at home, but you have to follow some simple steps for getting this beneficial spice in your backyard. First, it is essential to collect some sand, vermicompost, handfuls of coconut husk, and 2 handfuls of garden soil. Mix them and apply to the plant’s root.
It is important to select a pot with a drainage hole to avoid waterlogging. Fill the pot about 80% with the prepared soil mix. You can use either a seed or a cutting to grow nutmeg. For seeds, plant them 2 to 3 inches deep in the soil. If you’re using a cutting, place it directly into the soil to help the roots spread.

Sprinkle some water on the soil after planting the seedling. A moderate amount of water is required for the Nutmeg plants; the soil should remain slightly moist but not over wet, as too much water can rot the roots.
Nutmeg plants flourish in partial shade with minimal direct sunlight. Choose a place in your home that receives mild light and some shade for best results. Water your plant regularly, but avoid over-watering. Every two months, add a bit of vermicompost or organic fertilizer to enrich the soil. This will keep your plant healthy and ensure strong growth.
After a little care, you can enjoy the benefits of fresh nutmeg right at home. Not only will it be a unique addition to your spice collection, but it will also enhance the beauty of your garden.
