Gujarat governor inaugurates maiden organic farmers’ open market

Surat: Crops grown through organic farming are the key to good health. The demand for natural fruits and vegetables has been increasing. Gujarat’s governor Acharya Devvrat inaugurated Surat’s first natural farming farmers’ market at the city’s Vesu area. This unique market was launched through a joint effort by the Surat Municipal Corporation and the District Panchayat. Here fruits and vegetables grown by natural or organic farming methods will be available. The market will only open two days a week.

Governor Devvrat said that the government has been working to improve public health, maintain soil fertility, and protect the environment. “Natural farming is the only long-term solution,” he said. He also pointed out that excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides led to serious diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart problems that are now affecting children as well.

He asked the Surat residents to buy organic crops from this market. ‘It is important to spend some money on healthy foods instead of hospital bills; natural crops will keep you healthy,’ he added. The governor also shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently announced the Natural Farming Mission as a national mission. The central government has allocated a budget of Rs 1,481 crore.

This is the first market of natural products. Earlier, organic products were displayed in temporary markets and exhibitions. This initiative is expected to spread awareness among the people to concentrate on natural crops for better health, and it would be a strong message for farmers to grow chemical-free produce. The development of such kinds of markets would be a big boost for residents and farmers in the promotion of better health, sustainability, and a cleaner environment.
