Hamirpur farmer earns lakhs through modern techniques
Hamirpur: A farmer from Hamirpur, Mahendra Singh, has given a new shape to his farming business in the past 20 years. He started doing modern techniques on his 20 kanals of land; he used all the modern methods, cultivating different kinds of vegetables, fruits, crops, and mushrooms. At last, his hard work paid dividends to him, earning him an impressive annual income of Rs 10 lakh.
Singh shifted from traditional farming to horticulture. In 2017, he discovered the ‘Dr. YS Parmar Kisan Baagwan Samridhi Yojana,’ a government program that helps farmers and makes them economically sound through modern farming methods.

He got the knowledge of polyhouses, which protect crops from extreme weather. He established three polyhouses with the support of the government (each 250 square meters) and began growing tomatoes, bell peppers, and cucumbers. With the growth of these crops, he fetched good profits.
Apart from vegetables, he expanded his limitations and started growing peaches, apples, and lemons, further increasing his earnings. He also set his feet into mushroom farming, setting up two units to grow button and oyster mushrooms, which became another valuable source of income.
Currently, Mahendra Singh is a role model for other farmers in the area. Farmers can boost their income through modern techniques and by availing themselves of government support. His story encourages other farmers to adopt horticulture because it is more profitable compared to traditional farming.
