Haryana farmers adopt horticulture for higher profits

Palwal: Farmers in Haryana have been gradually switching toward horticulture farming, leaving traditional cultivation behind, fetching high profits. The Horticulture Department has been providing all supports and encouraging them to adopt horticulture. The state government has announced to give subsidies so that they don’t need to run from pillar to post and can purchase seeds and saplings easily. The horticulture sector includes mushroom production, flower farming, vegetable and fruit cultivation.

In Haryana’s Palwal district, the Horticulture Department has set a target of 130 hectares for staking (using bamboo supports for climber crops) for the years 2024–25. This target has been achieved. Farmers have received a subsidy of Rs 46,000 per acre, money directly transferred to their bank accounts through the DBT system.

Several farmers, such as Khemchand and Govind, have adopted modern techniques for horticulture. They started tomato farming on 4 acres using climber techniques, where the tomato vines are supported by bamboo stakes. This method prevents diseases and increases production. Tomatoes remain in high demand all over the year, fetching substantial income. They have been using organic fertilizers instead of chemical ones like DAP or urea, getting healthier and more sustainable farming practices.

Numerous farmers have stopped growing traditional crops and are now fully focused on horticulture due to the profitability of horticulture farming. The shift has changed the complexion of Haryana farmers, strengthening their economic conditions.
