Horticultural waste processing unit to be set up in Belagavi
Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has planned to expand its waste management efforts. The BCC is all set to establish a horticultural waste processing unit. This project is inspired by the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and was approved during a recent health standing committee meeting. Several corporators recently toured Chandigarh, and they got a lot of impressions after seeing the horticultural waste processing unit.
BCC needs at least two acres of land for setting up the horticulture waste processing unit. Officials are looking for land in nearby villages. The project will manage waste, but it is expected to generate revenue as well. Besides this, the processing unit will decrease the burden on the Turmuri waste dumping yard.

Hanumant Kaladagi, an environmental engineer at BCC, stated that the city produces 5-6 tonnes of garden waste daily. This waste will be converted into briquettes, which are in high demand in the industrial sector as a fuel source.
Horticultural waste processing has the ability to transform waste materials from fruit and vegetable processing into valuable resources or energy through methods like composting, biogas production, and extracting bioactive compounds.
Waste processing is helpful in making the nutrient-rich compost. Compost is a boon for soil amendment. It increases soil fertility and becomes helpful in the promotion of plant growth.
